How it's calculated
Change = new rent − current rent
Percent change = change ÷ current rent
The dollar change is exact. The percent change is always measured against the current rent and rounded to two decimal places (half rounds up).
Example: $1,800 to $1,875
- Change: $1,875.00 − $1,800.00 = $75.00
- Percent change: $75.00 ÷ $1,800.00 = 4.1666…%, which rounds to 4.17%
If the new rent were $1,750 instead, the result would be a $50.00 decrease, or 2.78%.
Common questions
Does this work for a rent decrease?
Yes. If the new rent is lower, the result and the copied summary show a decrease instead of an increase.
Why is the percentage different if I swap the two rents?
The percentage is measured against the current rent. Going from $1,800 to $1,875 is a 4.17% increase, but going from $1,875 to $1,800 is a 4% decrease.
What if the current rent is $0?
There's nothing to compare against, so only the dollar change is shown and the percent change reads "Not applicable."
When should I copy with or without the percent?
Both copy the current rent, the change, and the new rent. Use the version with the percent when the reader needs it, such as when checking an increase against a percentage cap.
How is this different from the rent renewal calculator?
This calculator starts from two rents and finds the change. The Rent Renewal Calculator starts from the current rent and a percentage or flat increase and finds the new rent.
Does this tell me how much I can raise the rent?
No. Some states and cities limit rent increases or require advance written notice. Check the lease and local rules before you send a renewal offer.
